The United Nations calls on Baghdad and Erbil to take practical steps to defuse tensions

BAGHDAD ( Reuters
) - UN Secretary General Antonio Guterich urged Baghdad and Erbil to take practical steps to defuse tensions and address outstanding issues within the Iraqi constitution. "The secretary-general appeals to the Iraqi federal government and the government of Erbil to take practical steps to defuse tension and prevent escalation and address the outstanding issues between them under the Iraqi constitution,"
Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for Guterich, told reporters at the headquarters of the International Organization in New York .
On the humanitarian situation of civilians in the region, Haq added that UNHCR and its partners in Iraq provide food, water and shelter to families who have fled Kirkuk and other disputed areas proactively in recent days for fear of large-scale military clashes.
"We believe that the majority of these families will return to their homes in the coming days, but some families are also likely to remain," he said, without giving figures or statistics to displaced families.
