BBB warns consumers about Iraqi dinar scam
Mar 1, 2007
The Council of Better Business Bureaus is warning consumers to be cautious when considering foreign currency investments, particularly those promoting speculation in the Iraqi dinar.
As of Friday, the BBB of Chicago and Northern Illinois had taken 93 consumer complaints (one from Cornville, Ariz) regarding dinar investments through United World Exchange doing business as US Dinar. As of today, the BBB of San Diego has taken 27 complaints from 15 states on the same company.
The BBB continues to field an increasing number of complaints from around the world, with many coming from military personnel claiming fraud over dinar investment deals with this company.
Potential investors claim to have bought Iraqi dinars for several hundred to several thousand dollars, with the hope that the value of the dinar will appreciate.
BBB Chicago has contacted the US Department of Treasury, the FBI, the US Postal Inspection Service, the Illinois Attorney General's office and local law enforcement agencies about this case.
Consumers who have purchased dinars and have not received them are urged to report the issue to the Chicago and Northern Illinois BBB office via their Web site, www.chicago.bbb.org or by calling (312) 832-0500.
