Conference Calls

I have been thinking about this for a long time. On the DinarRecaps I see conference calls posted from time to time. After years of corporate instructing and public school instructing I can come to the conclusion that anything over 60 minutes is un bearable. First most people do not have the time to listen for 187 minutes and will simply fall a sleep with you head phones on. The information is or should be important. If it is come to the point quickley, repeat the important areas and close. Repetition is good but too much can be boring and loose your audience. Anything over 60 minutes is either too much information or too much hot air. Just my opinion.

Agreed: That's the major reasoning behind the :60 radio and tv commercial. Keeping this in mind, we the people appear to not have an attention span of even less than one minute.

I comment on this based upon over 5 decades in media work. People just don't hear words and absorb meaning and process a message intellectually or emotionally. If the senses are not attracted through either a direct interest or perceived need, more often than not the entire body of work (call-message) becomes noise. Often times a more complete understanding is gained by repeated listening. This is key: repetition is the foundation of learning and knowledge. Why do you think that radio station you hear continues to give their call letters/logo /operative phrase?

People just don't get it! So, absolutely anything over 60 minutes is more often than not a sleeper or not really listened to. Make sure those headphones are not turned up too loud!

Most conference calls are unprepared and somewhat emotional rather than rational. I also speak in public. A wise mentor once told me if you want me to speak for an hour give me 5 minutes notice. If you want me to speak for 30 minutes ...give me an hours notice. If you want me to speak for 15 minutes...give me a week notice. Hence, these are unprepared calls whereby people are doing the best they can with their busy lives. Give the mods a breakand if you don'r have 187 minutes to listen yourself.........just click off!
