U.S. will keep 10,000 soldiers in Iraq if asked

Erbil, July 6 (Aknews) – The U.S. is willing to leave as many as 10,000 soldiers on Iraqi soil after the end of year deadline for withdrawal, U.S. media has reported.

Any extension would require a formal request from the Iraqi government, which is by no means certain. The ruling coalition is deeply divided about whether to call for troops to stay.

The U.S. administration has indicated that time is running out for the Iraqi government to make a decision one way or the other.

A recent peak in bombings and shootings targeting government officials and the security forces is thought to be aimed at forcing the government's hand to stick to the deadline. Radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has promised civil war if the Americans retain a military presence.

This has led some to say that the costs of any extension may outweigh the benefits to security that the troops would provide.

The 46,000 U.S. troops have reduced their role in the country in recent years. They do not patrol the streets and are only involved in operations at the request of the Iraqi military. Head of the army, Lieutenant General Babakir Zebari, recently said that Iraq could handle its own internal security, but the U.S. is needed to defend borders and airspace.

If the troops do withdraw as planned, the U.S. still plans to keep a significant presence in the country, with thousands of State Department staff members and several more thousand private security workers.
