Truly mind boggling.  When those articles came out a while ago about people getting a little cash for the Zimbabwe bank accounts that just poofed during the demonetization, I knew people would think that this was their big pay day.  I didn't think anyone would be quite dumb enough to actually fly to the other side of the planet to try and get their millions/billions.  These are from the middle of July, it's possible that these people are still there right now (though they'd already been there for a month at that point, so maybe they've given up by now). Just to recap the situation for people that aren't as familiar: Zimbabwe announced that they were going to pay people out for bank accounts (I didn't see any mention of notes, but maybe that too) at a rate of 35,000 Zimbabwe dollars per 1 USD, and that anyone that had a bank account in Zimbabwe when their currency was suspended would get at least 5 USD.  I believe they said they earmarked 20 million dollars to cover the entirety of this exchange. This of course only applies to the most recent Zimbabwe dollar, the fourth dollar.  The biggest note ever printed for the fourth dollar was $500 and when the dollar was suspended, it was worth about 2 USD.  Now (at the 35,000 to 1 rate) it's worth about 1 cent. So these people saw this and got all excited.  Not understanding that their Zimbabwe dollars (probably 3rd dollar, likely 50 and 100 trillion dollar notes) underwent a redenomination that lopped off 12 zeros, meaning that, if they were to get any rate at all, it would be 35 quadrillion to 1, not 35 thousand to 1.   So if they had 20x100 trillion notes (likely bought off eBay for 5-30 bucks each or so), they'd have about 2 quadrillion dollars.  At the 35,000 to 1 rate, they'd have been trying to get Zimbabwe to give them 57 BILLION dollars.  In actuality, instead of being worth 57 billion, their 20 notes would be worth about 6 cents.  Not 6 cents each.  Total. It's also possible that they actually didn't have the third dollar, but instead had the second dollar.  The fact that they reference buying before the ten zero lop makes me think this, as the ten zero lop was between the 2nd and 3rd dollar, the lop between the 3rd and the 4th was 12 zeros. Which of course makes things even crazier.  In order to convert between the 2nd dollar and the 4th dollar (the 4th dollar being the one worth 35,000:1), you have to drop 22 zeros.  The biggest note in the 2nd dollar was 100,000,000,000 (100 billion).  So if that's the notes they had, they were hoping to get about 2.9 million USD per note.  But a 100 billion note only has 11 zeros to drop.  When you drop 22 zeros, 100,000,000,000 becomes something like 0.00000000001 dollars.  Anyway, you get the picture.  The notes they thought were worth millions or billions were worth less than a penny, and in the case of the 2nd dollar, would be worth something like 1 quadrillionth of a penny. I feel a little bit bad for them, but at some point people have to take responsibility for their own actions.  People like this simply shouldn't be handling their own money.  They shouldn't be doing their own investing.  But I'm sure they don't realize this.  How do you protect people like this from themselves? Some quotes (it's kind of long to copy the whole thing): Quote :My name is Terry-------. My husband Charles ______ traveled to Harare Zimbabwe for the demonetization process. We are US citizens, a long term investment in the Zimbabwean dollar was made prior to the deletion of the ten zeros of the currency on the XE international forex. I and my husband had reviewed the demonetization process and had phoned the RBZ several times and confirmed exchange rates of z$35,000 to every $1 USD. The RBZ itself had confirmed this exchange rate for the U.S. Citizens as did the IMF. We arrived in Harare Zimbabwe on June 24th 2015 leaving our two year old son at home with Family. We had been instructed by the RBZ to go into any local international bank to make our exchange...  We where then escorted to the reserved bank of Zimbabwe and where sat down by the head officials of the RBZ and told we had no rights to our U.S. Exchange rate and ONLY continued to PUSH Zimbabwean rates at us. We however knew this was a violation of our rights as US citizens and began the crusade to see justice. Apparently she thinks that Zimbabweans get the terrible rate and foreigners get paid billions?  Not unlike the gurus I've seen over the years stating that Americans will get rich off the dinar but the dinar in Iraq will be lopped. Yeah, just give us 60 billion dollars, and we'll use some of it to help your country.  Thanks.  Very charitable of you. Yet not a single one will pick up the phone to speak to the U.S. Justice department to confirm the SDR rates and exchange rates for US citizens. Not a single one makes a legal case on my behalf. Give them all one day to contact the reserve and they begin to argue that we are the "public" and that this supposid demonetization is LAW! However there are no laws in this policy and the policy seems to be just a way of confusing the public and making them believe they must of had some account, which NONE actually had. Making them believe the ZIM is going to be demonetized when it's very obviously being bought back for a purpose and that purpose is NOT to throw it in the trash! It dose not take a very intelligent person to see the deception behind this policy and that there are other issues here they are desperate to avoid! One being that demonetizing has NOTHING to do with when the notes where printed. It means the status is no longer legal NO matter what the year of print. Two being that there are VERY clear exchange rate differences that have absolutely nothing to do with if a Zimbabwean that lost money in 2008. They only care about the year it was in print. The citizens can't question this as they all believe and are told to believe this is the END of the ZIM dollar. When it  10 truly is just a stall tactic for the currency to slowly make its way back into circulation. The RBZ continues to give speculations and opinions. However I have consulted with several lawyer on this matter and believe this is a VERY big cover up for the money making process in which the ZIM dollars are sold to prospective investors..
