Doggie Sweet Potato Chewy Chips
I was looking online for some recipes and came across this site. I ordered a dehydrator from Amazon to try them but this recipe has the oven steps.
Has anyone made these. I bought some at the store for my dog and they are expensive. I was hoping to make them cheaper and healthier at home.
Ingredients:
Optional Equipment:
Instructions:
Storing - Although these treats are dried, you will want to keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. You can freeze them for up to 4 months.
Here is the link, they have some other good doggie treat recipes in here.

Ingredients:
- 1 Large Sweet Potato, washed & dried
Optional Equipment:
- Food Dehydrator
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 250° F
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Cut off one side of the sweet potato lengthwise, as close to the edge as possible. Cutting the side of the potato first allows you to then turn the potato onto this flat surface that you have just created. Having a stable area to rest the potato will make it easier to cut the potato into slices. Don't discard that first piece, it comes out just as yummy as the rest!
- Cut the rest of the potato into 1/3" slices, no smaller than 1/4".
- Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 3 hours, turning half way through.
- Cool completely on a wire rack.
Storing - Although these treats are dried, you will want to keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. You can freeze them for up to 4 months.

I've never made these, but think I'll give them a try. Dogs (at least mine) loves sweet potatoes. They'd make a great low calorie snack.

ssmth, I'm going to make them with skins for the dog and without skins for me. You can use a mandolin for thinner slices for human sweet potato chips.

Re: Doggie Sweet Potato Chewy Chips
Here's a recipe for Tendon Soup I got from my vet. Good for elderly dogs with arthritis, cartilage damage, etc. Good for me too! It has collagen which is good for skin, nails, etc.
Basic Tendon Soup Recipe
1. Use 1.5 - 2 pounds beef tendons.
2. Cover tendons with water, add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and 3 tablespoons garlic
cook for 4-6 hours. Add water as needed.
3. Add 2 medium size root vegetables (turnip, parsnips or rutabaga) to the pot.
4. Add more water if needed to cover the tendons and root vegetables, bring to a boil
and then reduce to a simmer.
5. Simmer about 4 hours. (Increase cooking time if using a crock pot). Add water as
needed.
6. Add 1 Tablespoon of Turmeric. One teaspoon of one or two of the following if
desired (coriander, fennel seeds, chili powder, cardamom, cumin, ginger or parsley)
7. Cook for about 2 more hours.
8. Then add one or two of the following: (Spinach, flat leaf parsley, kale, chard,
greens, green beans, broccoli, carrots, sweet potato or pumpkin). Cook for about
2 more hours.
9. Allow the soup to cool and then gel in the refrigerator. The final product should
gel completely if cooking times have been long enough. The gel is nutrient rich and
full of glucosamine, chondrotin and ligament support.
10. Feed the gel as a top dressing on the food or as a small meal. For dogs with
sensitive stomachs, begin with small amounts and increase slowly.
11. Save enough of the gel in the refrigerator for about 7 days. Freeze the remaining
get in daily, pint or quart portions for later use.
Dosing: Small dogs & cats 3/4 Tablespoon
Medium Dogs 1 to 2 Tablespoons
Large Dogs 3 to 4 Tablespoons
After the tendons are soft, I chop them up and run them through a food processor. My dog loves it and after he was on it a couple of weeks, I kept noticing how much shiner his coat was......and it was shiny to begin with. Some mornings I noticed he would start to stretch and would stop. I've had him on this for a little over a month and he is definitely more limber.
If I'm making a soup or stew for myself, I will add some of this into it. Also it's good on rice noodles, but I add more soy sauce. There's a lot of info on the internet about the benefits of this. Can't hurt and it is tasty.

Re: Doggie Sweet Potato Chewy Chips
ssmith, I've seen this somewhere before but I think it was for humans.
You want collagen for yourself. The easiest way is to eat...you got it...Jello... For myself I buy the collagen from a company (Great Lakess)and put it in warm water for drinking. It's Collagen Hydrolysate.
Or you can just make jello or jello gigglers. I would not give those to dogs though.
2-1/2 cups boiling water (Do not add cold water.)
2 pkg. (8-serving size each) JELL-O Gelatin, any flavor
STIR boiling water into dry gelatin mix in large bowl at least 3 min. until completely dissolved. Pour into 13x9-inch pan.
REFRIGERATE at least 3 hours or until firm.
DIP bottom of pan in warm water 15 sec. Cut into 24 decorative shapes using 2-inch cookie cutters, being careful to cut all the way through gelatin to bottom of pan. Lift JIGGLERS® from pan. Reserve scraps for snacking. Store in tightly covered container in refrigerator.
