“Military forces today started an offensive to retake the east-central parts of Ramadi,” Faleh Al-Issawi, deputy chief of Anbar provincial council, said by phone today. Vehicular traffic was banned in the city, he said.
Control of Ramadi has seesawed for months between the sides. The city is the capital of Anbar, Iraq’s largest province, and capturing it would be a victory for Islamic State as it battles to tighten its grip on Sunni areas of Iraq.
The governor of Anbar, Ahmed Abu Risha, and other tribal chiefs met with U.S. officials in Washington last week to discuss arming tribal fighters against Islamic State, according to a statement from the governor’s office. The delegation, which is to return to Iraq tomorrow, was promised arms to help the province oust the militants, according to the statement.

The Iraqi army, backed by pro-government tribes, Shia volunteers and Kurdish Peshmerga forces, has so far managed to make significant gains in the fight against the terrorists.
I wish them luck in their attack and hope that they come out the other side successful and with low casualties.
I continue to be amazed at the hedge words that are used even here in this piece. "Security forces. Peshmerga. Tribesmen." Seems like the Iraqi army is incapable of going on the offensive without all the other groups 'supporting' them.
I'll stop being an ass about these weasel words when the Iraqi army is capable of a press announcement that only includes the army without any of the other forces 'supporting.' And you KNOW that if they could, the Iraqi army would be all over the place bragging about what they are accomplishing if it were just the army.
Hasn't happened yet.
