This video shows us an ingenious way to heat a whole room for under 15 cents a day or less. It's simple, here's what you need:
Tealight candles
A metal bread pan
Two terracotta pots, 1 smaller than the other
A lighter / matches to light the candles

Re: Cheap way to heat a room
I need to get out in my storage room and go thru some things, and it is so cold, I am thinking of trying it. The room is 12X24 so I was thinking of making 2!!!! This would be better than the 1 little electric heater I have. Maybe instead of running a light to keep my chickens warm in their house I could use one of these!!!! That light is on night and day most of the time in the winter months!

Re: Cheap way to heat a room
It might work well in a small, very well insulated room or perhaps an interior space. A typical candle gives of somewhere around 260 BTU/Hr. So with four candles, you are looking at 1040 BTU/Hr. For comparison's sake, a 100W incandescent bulb will give off about 300 BTU/Hr and your typical 1500W space heater will provide a little over 5100 BTU/Hr.
How many BTUs do you need? Well that depends on a lot of things, outside temperature, R Factor of the insulation, how airtight the room might (or might not) be, number of windows and doors, how warm you actually want it to be. A very rough rule of thumb though is 10 W/SQ FT or about 35 BTU/Hr/Sq Ft. So then a 12X12 room would need about 20 candles to bring the room to the comfort range.
