Political Alliances Shift in Baghdad
[BGG] “The way the seats were distributed allowed these forces to come together and form a government that excluded the biggest winner in the elections”. Which, to me, sounds exactly like what Maliki did to the other blocs back in 2010. The largest winner in the elections (of 2010) not only got left out but has been abused ever since by the SLC.
[BGG] I have been pointing this coming trend out for weeks (as it related to the provincial elections). Maliki was the majority winner (still). However, he did lose some considerable ground from the previous provincial term (20-30%). This allowed the various factions (along with a couple of KEY alliance defections) to form enough of an alliance and form the government without him. This could well set a precedent for Iraqi politics for many years to come. The up side – is it keeps everyone at the bargaining table and willing to work with one another (a direct affront to the Maliki “majority doctrine”). It could well turn out to be a MASSIVE blessing in disguise.
[BGG] The downside for Maliki is the opposition seems to be using his own tactics against him. These opposers aren’t aligned in any traditional fashion. They are grouped more along the lines of their relative hatred/dislike of him.
[BGG] It doesn’t appear he is going out with a BANG – like many would have liked, but he is going out.
