Re: Congratulations Alleyrose
Alleyrose, when their ears are str8 up like that, it is called, 'cropped'-The ears are put in a 'cup', so to speak, and that way when they are older, their ears will stay that way-Just an enhancement to the animal's beauty and looks-The breed 'Doberman Pincher', was a type of dog that was used in Germany, as a guard dog, and they can be REAL ugly, if and when they were provoked-Usually, though, they were trained to be that way-

Re: Congratulations Alleyrose
I have always thought that cropping a tail and ears was kind of unnecessary. Poor creatures!!! Don't much care for claw removal either though I am hearing about a new laser treatment that does not require the cat to have its toe and claw severed. Poor creatures!!!!!!

Re: Congratulations Alleyrose
I'd never do that to an animal, as far as removing claws or cropping, as can you imagine the pain of having a cat declawed? If they got outside, they'd have no way of protecting themselves, other than their teeth-I'm not sure about cropping, although there may be a method that doesn't involve cutting their ears, to avoid the pain-

Re: Congratulations Alleyrose
Congratulations alleyrose!!!!!!!!!!!! Good for you. Nice to have you on the team.
As to animal disfiguring: we had a cat that was declawed ONCE. NEVER AGAIN. She was a rescue cat my wife got at the animal shelter (my wife volunteers over there). You had to be with her all the time she was outdoors for fear a neighbors dog(s) would figure out she had no defense. Then when we brought in another cat she again could not defend herself from the new comer. That got straightened out between them eventually, but we will never have that situation again.
If people want to spend money on animal "adjustments" - DONATE TO THE ANIMAL SHELTER or a RESCUE SHELTER instead.

Once it's done, it's done. So I mean no respect to ssmith's beautiful dobie. But have you ever seen a Doberman that has been left "natural"? They have floppy ears and a nice long tail. They don't appear nearly so menacing, although they are still wonderful guard dogs.

Thanks so much Aksafeone and dinarstar!!
Why do people de-claw cats, I've never heard of this? They have actually made all those modifications illegal over here, if you are caught with a dog with a docked tail and cropped ears man you will cop a heck of a fine!! So now those breeds are so commonplace because in my opinion they look really silly now, not that cropping ears was a huge thing over here it was more docking tails!

Re: Congratulations Alleyrose
I was curious about the why's and wherefores of docking and cropping. After some research, it appears that we are doing Dobermans no favors by not cropping their tails. The article below does a pretty good job of covering the pros and cons. I did not find such a good article on the practice of cropping the ears, however, in my research several reasons were given, one of which actually makes sense to me.
It appears that cropping while more controversial is belled to enhance sound localization, and assist the handler in assessing the dog's mood/level of alert. I'm not so sure of that, but I also found several references to it being done to protect the working dog in an attack mode. Dobermans naturally have rather long floppy ears, and it makes sense that they, like the tail, could be grabbed and used to distract or incapacitate the dog. In that context it does make sense to me.
Here is the article on the tails: http://www.terrificpets.com/articles/10243465.asp
Doberman Pinschers are one of the more than fifty breeds of dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club that have traditionally had their tails docked. Like other dogs with working histories, the tails were often docked to help prevent the tails from experiencing injuries on the job. As a matter of fact, Dobermans have a tail that is considered quite long if allowed to grow. Today, tail docking is the subject of much controversy and in this article we'll look at some of the pros and cons of the procedure.
The Pros
While opponents of
tail docking dismiss it as an unnecessary cosmetic procedure, although that it is true that the docking conforms to the "sleek" look that breeder Louis Dobermann had in mind, there are many that believe that it is in fact beneficial to the dog. One of the reasons is that a long tail on a dog that is working as a guard or police dog can be a tempting handle for an attacker to grab, seriously distracting and injuring the Doberman. Another reason is that the tail itself, when allowed to grow, is actually quite thin and fragile. Some Dobermans who have long tails have suffered from "broken tail," in the tail is injured and, in some cases, actually having broken vertebrae, and it is often a self inflicted injury. Some Dobermans have broken their tails by simply wagging it enthusiastically, regardless of whatever object the tail may be slamming into.
The Cons
For others, the practice is dismissed as nothing other than an unnecessary cosmetic procedure, causing the dog undue pain and leaving a tail that can often be extremely sensitive at the tip. The practice has actually been outlawed in several countries around the world, notably European countries such as Norway, Sweden, Greece and Switzerland. In other countries, the procedure must be done by a licensed veterinarian, as this is meant to deter "backyard breeders" to try to do this procedure on their own without any experience.

No wonder it's against the law over there, that must have happened to the 'Queen' of England, see, because Austrailia is under british rule, so now I now where all the stupid laws in Austrailia come from- The Queen needs to be in a nursing home, in a str8 jacket,permanently-She is the one that your council and congress members confer with BEFORE they pass stupid laws- You want to see some stupid shite? www.dumblaws.com..... and check out all the stupid laws the U.S. has passed and put on the books in the last 200 years, in all 50 states- You'll shite!! This tells me our congressmen are retarded at best-And they run the Whitehouse? Think about that for a minute or 3-That's a 'horror' show in itself, nevermind ' Freddie Krueger'-{ Friday the 13th movie}

Re: Congratulations Alleyrose
Thanks, Kevin, for your research ... as always. You make us smarter people!
To me the Dobermans (Dobermen?) are gorgeous dogs either way. At least if ears are cropped and tails docked UNDER ANESTHESIA when they are puppies it is not too traumatic for them. Their natural tails are certainly not the muscular appendages of, say, a German Shepherd Dog. But if a Dobie is a pet there's not much danger of injury to the tail. And as far as ears go, the historical case does make sense. But modern pet Dobies shouldn't be doing battle, and mostly don't need their ears cropped. I am personally opposed to ear cropping, tail docking or or the removal of cats' claws. HOWEVER, just look at ssmith's avatar, and ya gotta admit that is one beautiful Doberman!

Oopsie .... duhhhh
If their tails are so brittle that they can break from wagging, it is probably best to dock them, certainly kinder than letting them suffer multiple fractures in life because of it's fragility.
