Sounds like they had a party to celebrate the arrival of their first 777!

Is Boeing building bad engines these days? How did I miss that bit of news?

Re: Iraqi Airways receives first Boeing 777
It was about a week or so ago, that during testing of the new engines, that the turbine blades inside the jet part itself, came loose under strain, and disintigrated, and they may have repaired them by now- They were supposed to be installed in the new jetliners-

Actually, Boeing does not build jet engines. From their website:
Three engine manufacturers developed more efficient and quieter
turbofans to power the 777. General Electric offers its GE90 series,
Rolls Royce offers the Trent 800 series of engines and Pratt &
Whitney offers the PW4000 series. For the longer range 777 models and
the Freighter, GE is the exclusive engine supplier with its GE90-115B
and GE90-110B. All three engine types offer excellent fuel efficiency.
I believe the GE engines are the most common by a fair margin.

Re: Iraqi Airways receives first Boeing 777
Thanks for the correction- I had always thought that boeing was the one that had faulty engines, but either way the end result was the same- The plane CRASHED-So, then the 'G.E ' engines were the ones that flew apart-it doesn't surprise me as I used to buy 'G.E.' light bulbs, and the life expectancy of one of those light bulbs is about 3-4 months-

Re: Iraqi Airways receives first Boeing 777
As I was reading Kevin's post I was thinking "The GE engines are probably the bad ones." And then you mentioned it, too, terbo. General Electric is certainly not the fine company it used to be.

Thankyou, Seb-I'm an auto technician and welder, and don't really know that much about aircraft, I just know, like you said, that G.E. doesn't make anything like they used to-I do know that when the engines get alot of run time like that, they aren't inspected as often as they should be, like an auto engine, if the maintenance isn't done when it's scheduled to be, they won't last very long-Especially the new ones that are built from 2004-present-

Then when you add in counterfit parts made in China or elsewhere you have a recipe for disaster.

Re: Iraqi Airways receives first Boeing 777
The one Boeing 777 crash was at Heathrow airport in 2008 and was the result of ice clogging the fuel lines which caused the engines to lose power without warning. It was returning from Beijing so ..... BTW the fuel systems were redesigned to prevent further incidents. There was a failure of a GE90-115B engine on an Air Canada flight in June, the plane landed safely. There was a known potential problem with an FCC directive requiring replacement of blades in one of the compressor stages at the next shop visit.

Most (all?) of the GE Turbine blades are made by GE here in Rutland, some are of various metal alloys, and some are composite, depending on where they are used.

Re: Iraqi Airways receives first Boeing 777
Just like cars and trucks, they have inferior parts, usually from China,Korea- Alot of the electronic ignition modules, and driveability computers usually screw up along the 15,000 25,000 mile intervals, and they are NOT cheap- Some have to be 'reflashed' {updated, or upgraded} to coincide with the ignition systems, and this is the Manufacturer's fault- If the battery is disconnected, on some vehicles, this causes a world of hurt-Especially G.M. and Toyota vehicles- Fords and Chryslers aren't that bad- YET!

Re: Iraqi Airways receives first Boeing 777
Reading up on this it appears the same engine had suffered FOD from some geese in 2009. There was some speculation that there may be a connection. Don't know if they found anything. In general, the engines are very, very reliable. In over 7.4 million flight miles they have experienced a failure rate of .0014 percent. My guess is no Chinese parts there.

Re: Iraqi Airways receives first Boeing 777
Just making an observation- The engines have parts from different vendors, they make alot of them, and must have a corporate parts bin someplace, besides the U.S., just sayin-' Parts for everything are usually made in other countries, because the U.S. can't be bothered, seeing how they ship all the jobs overseas, because they can do the work for $2.00 a day, compared to the labor rate here in the U.S., and it seems fit to do this, thanks to the 'O' administration-In 10 years, the U.S. will have nothing-
