Does anyone remember any bad candy you received? I don't mean dangerous (with razor blades or something like that). I just mean gross candy that you didn't like? I never got any candy I wouldn't eat. Christmas sometimes brought chocolate covered gelatinous substances, and I'd spit those into the wastebasket. But I don't think there was ever a Halloween candy disaster for me. Apples weren't that exciting, but sometimes there would be homemade chocolate chip or oatmeal cookies. SCORE!!!!

Some of the best and biggest candy bars came from the spooky-looking old houses where no one wanted to ring the doorbell. And the old folks living there were kind and made a fuss over all us kids and our costumes.

How about you? Halloween Bad Candy 4133515349 Halloween Bad Candy 2340081149Halloween Bad Candy 4133515349

Never met a candy bar I didn't like sooo ..... My mom and dad talked of trick or treating JC Penny's house when they were young. If he liked their costumes he would give them a silver dollar, if he really liked their costumes he would invite them in for a "glass of tea" and give them 5 when they left. Pretty darn generous when you consider per capita income was less than $2000/year then.

Great story, Kevin! There must have been a great deal of competition for really inventive costumes.

We didn't trick or treat at the swells' homes either, terbo, but it didn't matter where a bag full of candy came from. It was just important that we had collected LOTS OF IT!!!!!!!!

Seb, we had all kinds of candy, I was just responding to Kevind53's story of a piece of silver his folks experienced during their trick or treat years as youngsters-Back where I lived, people were lucky to be able to 'pass out' candy, times were bad back then in the mid to late 60's, but not so bad as they are now-But, we'd get a small rock once in a while, or a clothes pin sometimes- I guess it was all some people had, or were being 'cheap', whichever the case may be, and others wouldn't even come to the door, or they would open the door quickly, scream at us, and tell us to go bug someone else-

Holy mackerel, terbo. That's awful. Pretty scary for a little kid! Halloween Bad Candy 2340081149 I never had an experience like that. But when I was 4 or 5 years old, a couple of years I got so excited (or had stage fright) that I threw up my dinner and wasn't allowed to go out trick-or-treating. My brothers had to each contribute a few pieces of their loot into a bag for me so I didn't feel left out. Now that I think about it, that wasn't such a bad way to go ... except for the throwing up part.

Not my neighborhood dude, my parent's. WAY before my time. They just happened to live in the same neighborhood.

Actually, J.C. Penny was a good example for us. He was filthy rich, but did not live filthy rich. He lived like one of us would have then, and was a generous giver to the church and to those in need.
