How do you use colloquialisms in your day to day life? We most all know of the examples in this definition (below) But what are some of the ones you use daily? Please share with us and lets have a bit of fun with them. Like Cup vs Mug or, Jar vs Mason or, Freeway vs Thruway. Ok its your turn ! Here is the definition and a link to read more. Love ya.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colloquialism

A colloquialism is a word, phrase, or paralanguage that is employed in conversational or informal language but not in formal speech or academic writing.[1] Dictionaries often display colloquial words and phrases with the abbreviation colloq. as an identifier. Colloquialisms are sometimes referred to collectively as "colloquial language".[2]

The rest is in the link

Up north, fairy tales begin with, "Once upon a time...."

Here in the south, we say, "Ya'll are not gonna believe this....."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the south, we say, "Bless his heart...." then let loose with something like....."his elevator doesn't go to the top floor."
From Urban Dictionary: This is a term used by the people of the southern United States particularly near the Gulf of Mexico to express to someone that they are an idiot without saying such harsh words.
We're polite like that.
Coke vs Soda....
Yes horizon, Coke vs soda would be correct. In parts of the country any and all soda people call it "coke" no matter the flavor. Very good!
Aim88, Very cute but soooo true LOL
Something that I got a laugh at when I moved from Louisiana to MS was, when people referred to going to drink a beer....they would say they were going to get a, cold beer! Let's go get a Cold Beer!!!
I remember saying what other way would you drink a beer, sure wouldn't want a hot beer!!!colloquialisms,  Word fun 13_4_10
My ,mother-in-law, born and raised in the backwoods of Georga told me once that "Bless your little ole heart" was southern for "How can you be so dumb and still breathe." I'm a yank, so I'll have to take her word for it. Twisted Evil
Believe it or not, lots of folks still call the refrigerator an "ice box". And if you look in old recipe books you'll find recipes for ice box cookies.
I'm guessing abby ann would be partial to the Twinkies ... but then she'd make do with any of the rest in a pinch.
Palmer01's cake is much more elegant than mine. Must be a very high class affair where the guests are actually wearing shoes. colloquialisms,  Word fun 949729897
And the shower and toilets are located in the head. The floor is a deck, the sides are bulkheads, the ceiling is the overhead, the stuff you buy at the ships store is gedunk, the place were the bosuns hang out is the forecastle, (pronounced foc'sle), you eat on the mess deck ....
Their elevator doesn't go all the way to the top, a few bricks shy of a full load, dumb as a box of rocks, up the creek with no paddle, snake in the grass, slippery as an eel, slicker than snot on a door knob ... (OK all together now ... EWW GROSS!) He reminds me of the north end of a southbound horse, the last part over the fence ...
A local thing ... about half the older Vermonters I talk to say yup, yup instead of un huh when you are talking to them.
