It is a little after noon here in So Cal and soon the land of fruits and nuts will become darkened from this event. (and I do maen the land of fruits and nuts...as there sure a lot os friuts and nuts walking around here all the time) If you havent been here you wouldn't know but trust me. LOL

Please anyone that wants to add to this bring it on. Good time to learn about this fleeting subject. Love ya

Animation of eclipse path. large gray shadow: partial eclipse; small red dot: annular eclipse

A wondrous annular eclipse of the sun takes place today – May 20, 2012 as seen from the southwestern U.S. – or on May 21, 2012 according to calendars in Asia and Indonesia. For a comprehensive post about the annular eclipse, look here. This post focuses on the partial eclipse, which a hefty section of the world will be able to see today (or May 21, if you’re in Asia and Indonesia). Who, what, when, where in this post.

Watching a solar eclipse through special filters. You could use these to watch the May 20-21 annular or ring eclipse, and the June 5-6 transit of Venus. Buy them here. Image via Dionne Bunsha.

You must find a way to protect your eyes if you plan to watch either the annular solar eclipse on May 20-21, 2012 or the transit of Venus on June 5-6, 2012 – or both events. You have options.

Solar eclipse glasses from commercial manufacturers.
Welder’s glass, #14 or darker.
A home-rigged indirect viewing method.
A local astronomy club that is hosting a viewing.

Whatever you do, never look at the sun directly without a safe filter in place to protect your eyes.

If we look 18 years into the past, we find that there was an annular solar eclipse on May 10, 1994. This eclipse passed centrally through the USA, and I photographed it near Toledo, Ohio. Those photos will give you a preview of what the May 20, 2012 eclipse will look like because the moon and sun are nearly at the same positions and distances as they were during the 1994 eclipse.

Annular eclipse of the sun – China to Texas – on May 20 or May 21

Annular or ring eclipse seen in Bangui, Central African Republic on January 15, 2010. Image via Tino Kreutzer and Wikimedia Commons.

If you’re at just the right place in the southwestern United States, you can watch an annular eclipse of the sun in the afternoon hours on Sunday, May 20, 2012. This will be the first annular eclipse to take place in the mainland United States since May 10, 1994, and the next one won’t come until October 14, 2023. Outside the path of the annular eclipse, skywatchers will see a partial solar eclipse. An annular eclipse happens whenever the new moon swings directly in front of the sun, blocking out all but the outer portion of the solar disk from view. This kind of eclipse presents an apparent ring of fire – really, the outer edge of the sun – around the moon in the daytime sky at mid-eclipse.

This same eclipse will be visible from China on May 21, 2012. See inside for charts and eclipse times for both the eastern and western hemispheres!

Thanks for the reminder about the eclipse, Rick152. I understand it will be more pronounced farther north, but it will still be visible in the southland.

One of my brothers (lives in Wyoming) calls CA granola land -- fruits, flakes and nuts. Not sure which category he thinks I fall into.....Eclipse today 949729897

Today is also a New Moon, representing a new beginning. The old timer's Farmer's Almanac said New Moons were good times to plant things because they would grow faster, as the moon gets bigger (waxes).

Eclipses during a New Moon or Full Moon are considered intense and extra auspicious. So this means extra good luck for all of us. I don't know about you all, but I have had some unusually pleasant encounters in the last 2 weeks and lots of acknowledgement.

If you want your hair to grow faster, cut it on the new moon. If you want it to grow slowly, cut it after the full moon, when the moon is waning. Same goes for pulling weeds....do it after the full moon.
