Iraq seeks to join the World Trade Organization

Iraq seeks to meet the requirements for joining the World Trade Organization, amid great challenges related to what observers describe as structural, economic and legislative "distortions" that hindered the process of obtaining membership officially. Baghdad had previously obtained observer status only, due to the presence of many conditions that it did not fulfill in this context.

Tharwat Akram, director of the World Trade Organization Department (a governmental institution) affiliated to the Iraqi Ministry of Trade, told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that his ministry had prepared the necessary plans to join the organization, and specialized committees had been formed with the participation of the Iraqi private sector and relevant ministries and agencies.
He added that the ministry worked on the completion of technical accession files in terms of goods, services and intellectual property, in addition to harmonizing legislation and laws with the organization's agreements, in coordination with the General Authority of Customs and the Iraqi Standardization and Quality Control Agency, for the purpose of submitting the file, negotiating it, and approving it after completing the accession requirements.
Akram emphasized that the private sector is one of the most important active partners in drawing up the state's economic policy, and it is very important for it to have a say in making decisions that would advance the national economic reality.
In order to obtain membership in the World Trade Organization, a number of structural and organizational conditions and determinants must be met in the Iraqi economic policy, according to economic researcher Ali al-Hayani, foremost of which is addressing structural imbalances, diversifying economic sectors, and not relying solely on oil to finance the gross domestic product. .

Al-Hayani told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that Iraq is not ready to join the World Trade Organization, in light of its current situation, unless economic and legislative reforms are achieved in order to overcome the obstacles facing the application file for accession.

He added that one of the most important conditions for accession is adherence to trade protection policies, the abolition of customs restrictions imposed on imports, and the placement of a customs tariff, which requires a comprehensive review of Iraqi customs laws, in addition to working on implementing an appropriate agricultural policy that addresses support issues, and allowing agricultural imports to enter the markets. local, subject to customs tariff.
He explained that among the other conditions that must be met, is the activation of the service sector towards the outside world, and the issuance and implementation of a measure of legislation compatible with the minimum requirements for protection of intellectual property rights agreed upon in the Uruguay Convention, as well as Iraq's commitment to implementing comprehensive economic reform policies that allow free movement of heads. Foreign funds and investments.
In 2010, the Iraqi Ministry of Trade announced that it had taken several economic and commercial steps to obtain membership in the World Trade Organization, by reviewing the agreements previously signed with more than twenty countries. It also recently announced its quest to join the World Trade Organization, through a plan it prepared to complete the requirements of Joining the organization, after completing the technical files in terms of goods, services and intellectual property.
The World Trade Organization is the largest economic organization, being the main engine of the global economy. It has 164 member states, representing more than 98 percent of world trade and global commercial GDP.
Iraq's tendency to join is an important matter at the level of the country's economy in general and the stability of its markets, as it will create the necessary economic and legislative conditions for development, but it does not guarantee the desired benefits for the country, because obtaining those advantages depends on the extent of the country's ability to create an appropriate climate capable of implementing the organization's commitments. , while the survival of Iraq outside the framework of the organization will make it in international isolation.

Specialists believe that Iraq is not ready to join the organization unless economic and legislative reforms are achieved that overcome obstacles to Iraq's accession file, which requires more efforts to create all the necessary requirements, to facilitate its mission to obtain full membership.

The General Coordinator of the Network of Iraqi Economists, Bariq Shubar, believes that there is no benefit in Iraq's accession to the organization, due to the current economic and political situation.
Shubar pointed out, during his interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, that membership in the World Trade Organization brings benefits to countries that have strong export industries and commodities, and this is what Iraq loses, because it does not have such industries, but rather depends on imports.
He added that Iraq's accession to the organization means adherence to the rules of free international trade, and among its conditions is freezing the level of customs tariffs at the current ceilings and gradually reducing them, and Iraq is not allowed to raise their levels except in cases of dumping after the approval of the organization.

He explained that Iraq should not rush the process of joining the organization, and maintain the status of observer, so that it can work on creating a fertile and appropriate environment for joining.

That translates to warp the mind of others.

Again...What you posted has nothing to do with making any changes in the exchange rate.

Does that not tell you just how worthless the Dinar is when Iraqis don't want to use it?
