Baghdad - news

The Philippines announced today, Tuesday, its intention to evacuate all its citizens working in the Middle East, due to the tensions and escalation that the region is witnessing between the United States and Iran against the backdrop of recent events.

And the Philippines is preparing, according to foreign media, followed by "Al-Akhbariya", to evacuate thousands of its citizens working in the Middle East with the escalation of tension in the region, where about 2.3 million Filipinos work in the domestic labor and construction sector or as engineers and nurses.

Salvador Panilo, a spokesman for Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, said in remarks, according to Reuters: The president ordered the armed forces to prepare air and sea assets to evacuate Filipinos from Iraq, Iran and neighboring Arab countries.

Philippine President Duterte has expressed grave concern about the possibility of a "long war" after the killing of Iran's Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani, and told reporters that he has sent a special envoy to Tehran and Baghdad to obtain guarantees of safe passage for the Filipinos if they are evacuated.

Defense Minister Delphine Lorenzana, who heads a committee recently formed to prepare for the evacuation of Filipinos from the region, said that the government is preparing planes to transport its citizens who want to return to their country or move from Iraq and Iran to safer places.
