The US State Department on Monday called on the Iraqi government to investigate the "horrific killing" of demonstrators in Nasiriyah.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the United States urged Iraq on Monday to investigate the "hateful" killing of demonstrators, and condemned what it described as excessive force in the volatile southern city of Nasiriyah.

David Schenker, the top US diplomat in charge of the Middle East, said: "The use of excessive force during the weekend in Nasiriyah was appalling."
