The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity, Abbas Jabr, on Wednesday, that Iraq has three years to achieve self-sufficiency of electricity and it is difficult for him to achieve it in a short period.

"Iraq currently produces 19.5 gigawatts of electricity a year and needs 26.5 gigawatts," he said.

"This is compelled because the ministry does not have enough generating capacity to cover the demand in Iraq," he said, stressing that "it is difficult for Iraq to achieve self-sufficiency in electricity, but perhaps it can within three years."

He pointed out that "these figures do not include the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq."
