KUWAIT CITY - The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry received on Sunday about 200,000 books from its Iraqi counterpart belonging to the National Library and Kuwait University that were stolen during the Iraqi invasion in 1990.
Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Organizations Affairs Advisor Abdulaziz Al-Jarallah told KUNA that the handover is the result of constructive cooperation between the two foreign ministries.
Al-Jarallah stressed that Kuwait continues to urge the Iraqi side to hand over all the national archives and Kuwaiti properties that were looted systematically during the Iraqi invasion.
He explained that the handover process is in cooperation and under the supervision of the United Nations and the UNAMI mission in Iraq, in implementation of Security Council resolution 2107 issued in 2013.
For his part, Iraqi Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry Ambassador Hazem Al-Yousifi said his country is keen to abide by the Security Council resolutions related to Kuwait and re-looted during the Iraqi invasion.
Al-Yousifi stressed Iraq's keenness to consolidate brotherly relations between the two sides, recalling Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's recent visit to Iraq and Iraqi President Barham Saleh's visit to Kuwait.
He pointed out that the Iraqi Foreign Ministry has made great efforts to restore the archive in various stages and collect this archive looted by the former regime.
Al-Yousifi expressed his happiness with the positive results achieved so far in the service of bilateral relations, stressing the continuation of Iraq on the approach of developing ties of brotherly relations.
