[ltr]America's new ambassador to the United Nations takes office[/ltr]
[ltr]Kelly Kraft, the 57-year-old US ambassador, began her duties at the United Nations on Thursday, nine months after Nicky Hayley left.[/ltr]
[ltr]Kelly Kraft passed to reporters at UN headquarters in New York, refusing to answer questions as she met Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at his office.
Donald Trump's first ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, resigned at the end of last year. Since then, the second US mission to the United Nations is run by Ambassador Jonathan Cohen.
Born on February 24, 1962, Kelly Craft served as US ambassador to Canada, where she participated in negotiations for a new free trade agreement in North America.
Kraft is married to billionaire Joe Kraft who works in coal mining. At a Senate hearing in June, she pledged that she would make room for climate-related policies to move forward, despite her wealthy family working in coal mining.
Kraft said she would not personally participate in any UN discussions on coal.
The annual United Nations General Assembly at the level of world leaders will begin its work on Monday (September 23rd) with a climate summit, which brings together heads of state and government on the initiative of Guterres.
The United States is the top financial contributor to the United Nations, paying 25% of the cost of peace operations and 22% of its operating expenses. is over[/ltr]
