The US embassy in Baghdad confirmed on Sunday that the State Department does not have censorship authority over the content of Al-Hurra TV after strong objections expressed by Iraqi circles after the channel broadcast a program that accused Iraqi religious institutions of corruption.

The embassy said in a statement that "Alhurra deals with transparency and impartiality, important issues in the region and US policies, with care to present all views on issues of concern to followers."

The statement added that "the State Department and US embassies around the world do not have control over the content of programs in Al Hurra."

"The Iraqi government has the right to respond and hold free to any report that it considers to be inaccurate or inaccurate, or contrary to US policies," she said.
