Iraq’s National Security Council held its regular session in Baghdad on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Adil Abd Al-Mahdi.

The Prime Minister briefed the Council on the latest political and security developments in Iraq and the region.
The Council reaffirmed the right of Iraq to take the necessary legal and diplomatic measures through regional institutions, the UN Security Council and the United Nations to defend its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity by all legitimate means.

The Council approved a series of recommendations presented by the technical committee of the criminal justice project, and authorised the Ministry of Interior to work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to complete the project.

The Council discussed and approved a request by the Ministries of Defence and Transport to fund a new naval base in Iraq’s territorial waters in the Gulf.

The establishment of the new naval base, which aims to provide protection to Iraqi ships and ports, will coincide with the construction of the Grand Al-Faw Port Project in Basra Province.

The Council agreed to conclude a draft memorandum of understanding on combating organised crime and terrorism between Iraq and Algeria.
