A British Royal Navy warship arrived in the Persian Gulf on Sunday to escort British-flagged vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz amid tensions after Iran seized a British tanker this month.

The British Defense Ministry announced that the ship "HMS Duncan" will join the ship Fraser Montrose in the Gulf to defend the freedom of navigation, according to the agency "The Associated Press."

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said the Royal Navy warship would escort the UK ships until a diplomatic decision was reached to secure the route again.

"Freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is vital not only to the United Kingdom, but also to international partners and allies. Commercial ships must enjoy the freedom to travel and move safely and legally anywhere in the world."

"As we continue to work on a political solution that makes passage of ships without military escort possible again, the Royal Navy will continue to protect British ships," he said.
