Ashti Hawrami, minister of natural resources in the semi-independent Kurdistan region, who has held the post for a long time, will take up an advisory post as assistant to new prime minister Mesroor Barzani for energy affairs, Kurdish deputies said.

Hawrami, energy minister in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) since 2006, is seen as the mastermind behind the region's plans to have his own energy industry away from the control of Baghdad's central government.

"Hawrami has been appointed as an aide to Prime Minister Mesrour Barzani for energy affairs and will contribute to the management of the energy portfolio until a new minister is appointed," said Kurdish deputy Sarwan Baban.

A copy of the prime minister's decision showed that Hawrami would be charged with implementing the decisions, powers and policies of the Iraqi Kurdistan government related to the oil and gas sector.

The post of minister of natural resources in the new Iraqi Kurdistan government remains vacant, and Kurdish political parties have not yet agreed on who will hold the post, sources said.
