Kadhim al-Aqabi, head of the border crossings authority, discussed with the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers Hamid al-Ghazi the mechanism of rehabilitating the border port of Safwan.



"A consultative meeting was held in the office of the secretary-general, in the presence of the head of the border crossing organization, Kazim al-Aqabi, the head of the legal department in the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, and the adviser of the Ministry of Interior Major General Alaa Hussein, The finalization of the settlement procedures and the termination of the contract between the Ministry of the Interior and the executing company of the rehabilitation project. "



He added that "Al-Ghazi urged the relevant parties to expedite the preparation of the requirements for the implementation of Iraq's commitment to the memorandum of understanding signed with Kuwait on the rehabilitation of the port of Safwan border in the province of Basra."



He added that the meeting focused on the importance of the ministry to resolve the legal, financial and technical matters related to the project, and to determine the rates of completion and stops that accompanied the project from the date of transmission and determine the causes, taking into account the importance of the port being the main crossing connecting Iraq and Kuwait, And economic effects to achieve the desired benefit between the two countries. The Minister of Commerce, Mohammed al-Ani, on Wednesday, to the province of Basra in preparation for meeting with his Kuwaiti counterpart Khaled Nasser Al-Rowdan at the port of Safwan border within the framework of the joint agreement to rehabilitate the port. 

The ministry said in a statement received by "Economy News" a copy of it, "The Minister of Commerce, Mohammed al-Ani arrived, today, to the province of Basra in preparation for meeting with his Kuwaiti counterpart Khaled Nasser Al-Rowdan in the port of Safwan border." 

"The meeting between the two ministers will discuss the development and rehabilitation of the port of Safwan Abdali in implementation of the agreement signed between the two countries, for the purpose of development and facilitate the movement of transport, which leads to increase the volume of trade exchange between the two countries and the provision of financial resources. 

"The minutes of the meeting between the Iraqi and Kuwaiti sides last February stipulated the implementation of a draft free trade agreement between the State of Kuwait and the Republic of Iraq and the establishment of a free trade zone."

The ministry added that "in the light of the minutes, the issue of entry visas for businessmen to the two countries was discussed. The two sides also discussed the rehabilitation of Safwan al-Abdali port to facilitate the movement of transport leading to increasing the volume of trade exchange between the two countries. And invite specialists from both sides to meet and coordinate to complete the technical aspects. " 

She pointed out that "a joint working group was also formed between the two countries to prepare plans, economic feasibility studies and the requirements of rail links between the two countries, as well as the formation of an economic committee to promote and develop trade and economic relations," indicating that " And investment protection. "

The ministry said that "the minutes of the previous agreement also included follow-up outputs of the Kuwait Conference and the frozen balances in the banks of both countries, in addition to the agreement of the two sides to hold meetings of the Iraqi Kuwaiti Committee at the earliest opportunity."

The Ministry of Commerce confirmed that the development and rehabilitation of the port of Safwan al-Abdali will contribute to the development of trade between Iraq and Kuwait and activates religious tourism through the entry of large numbers of Kuwaiti citizens to religious areas in Iraq, noting that it does not stop the Iraqi ports movement. 

The ministry said in a statement received by Mawazine News that "this port is an important link with the State of Kuwait and passes through daily many passengers from the two countries because of the social ties that connect many of the people of Basra and Kuwait, as well as the importance of commercial transport between the two countries, Has been disabled for many years for various reasons. "

It added that "the talk of some of the joint agreement between Iraq and Kuwait and the damage to Iraqi ports or the province of Basra is premature because the Convention goes through the preliminary reading stages in all the relevant bodies in the subject, including the province of Basra for study and the statement of interest of each party in it in the interest of Iraq As well as the formation of four joint committees between the two countries to resolve the outstanding issues and develop solutions to contribute to the achievement of important steps forward.
 
The statement stressed that "the desire of the two countries to develop the port of Safwan al-Abdali has great economic and social significance and indications not related to the work of any other facility as this port is one of the aspects of development sought by any country with another country in addition to being one of the faces of the country, And keeping the current poor condition in terms of facilities and supplies is not justified and will not serve the interests of all. "

The statement concluded that "the common desire of both countries' leadership and determination to overcome all obstacles to achieving progress in the level of relations in various fields will contribute to bridging the gap and restoring confidence to the two countries in overcoming a dark era that has re-established relations. Basra, because it is the first link in the relationship with the brotherly countries of Kuwait, where the officials expressed the desire to invest in Basra and help them to recover and to be an important economic partner. "
