The escalation of tension between the United States and Iran in the Middle East did not affect in any way the work of the NATO mission in Iraq.

Canadian General Danny Fortin, who leads the 500-strong NATO advisers and trainers mission in Iraq, confirmed his forces had "mitigated the threat" and could have continued working at a time when the United States had withdrawn its non-essential staff from its embassy in Baghdad and its consulate in Erbil. Germany and the Netherlands suspended their military missions in the country.

Fortin told reporters at the NATO headquarters in Brussels on Thursday that the security threat was still present without doubt, saying that the danger reached a critical level a few weeks ago, which called for the concerns of the United States and its partners.

He said that the forces of "NATO" in Iraq took in these circumstances measures to ensure "vigilance about things unpredictable and variables."

"That's why this has no impact on our advisory and training activities," he said.
