Iraqi Airways announced that it will resume flights from Baghdad to the Syrian capital Damascus on Saturday after an 8-year break. 

"Iraqi Airways will launch, for the first time, its first direct flights from Baghdad to Damascus on Saturday after an 8-year break," the company's spokesman, Laith al-Rubaie, told a news conference. 

"The company will organize a single flight from Baghdad to Damascus weekly," he said, adding that "the importance of flights given the size of the Iraqi community in Syria." 

The last flight took off from Baghdad International Airport to Damascus International Airport in December 2011, and was stopped after the Syrian crisis. 

For its part, welcomed the Syrian Ministry of Transport, in a statement, the resumption of flights to Iraqi Airways.
