France and Iraq signed a "strategic road map" that includes military, security and economic aspects, President Emmanuel Macaron announced Friday when he met with Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi at the Elysee Palace.

The cooperation between the two countries is based on several priorities, according to the French president, "the first is combating the terrorist threat, the battle was marked by victory on the ground, but today we have to continue this battle."

"France wants to remain a leading partner in the security of Iraq and helps strengthen your counter-terrorism capabilities, protect your borders, rearm your security services, and especially assist in the rehabilitation of many combatants," he said.

In the Levant, there are currently about 1,100 soldiers in the process of Shamal - France's contribution to the fight against the Islamic State Organization led by the International Alliance - including about 150 who are in charge of training and development of Iraqi forces.

A French government source confirmed that the deployment would remain as it is now.

"French aircraft will continue to participate in coalition operations to support Iraqi forces and French trainers will continue to train Iraqi soldiers," French Defense Minister Florence Barley said in a statement Friday.

She confirmed the withdrawal of French artillery batteries deployed on the Iraqi-Syrian border after the end of its mission in early April.

McCron said that the second priority is the reconstruction of Iraq, which will provide France with financial means. The French Development Agency will soon take up its headquarters in Baghdad.

McCron also expressed hope that Iraq would co-chair a conference with France in the autumn to support victims of ethnic and religious violence in the Middle East.

He said the road map would also promote bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, education and culture.

Paris will decide on a € 1 billion financing line for the country's infrastructure reconstruction projects with French companies.

On a cultural level, France helped rebuild Mosul University and establish a French-Iraqi cultural institute in places where it was an explosive organization.

At the regional level, Paris considers that "the stability of Iraq is crucial to the region" and its overall democracy is a model that should be followed by the transitional phases in the region.
