The Ministry of Construction and Housing announced on Sunday the signing of a desalination project in Basra with the largest Austrian consulting companies with a capacity of one million cubic meters.
The ministry's media office said in a statement received by Mawazine News, "The latter signed a contract for desalination project in the province of Basra with the major consulting companies in the field of water technologies, namely (ILF Austria) to prepare the master plans and final designs of the desalination project Card up to one million cubic meters. "
He added that "this project is the first of its kind in Iraq using desalination technology, which requires the preparation of studies and designs of its own, and the signing of this contract will enter the project into effect to find a real and final treatment of the problem of drinking water shortage in Basra and areas north of Basra to the province of Faw until 2060 ".
The statement pointed out that "the ministry is moving like all countries of the world towards the desalination of seawater, which is the first step for us in this area and it is possible within the next three months to start receiving offers and contract to be completed within a period of (3-4) years to end the problems of drinking water shortage in Basra Because of the differences in salinity and water levels in the Shatt al-Arab that the water projects are designed according to the ratios of salinity semi-fixed and this difference in addition to the great erosion of channels and conveyor lines led to the cessation of some water previously.
