Assad: Iraq and Syria must preserve their sovereignty in the face of partition schemes
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Sunday that regional and international developments in the arena require Iraq and Syria to voice their sovereignty in the face of partition plans.
The Syrian presidency quoted Assad as saying during his meeting with national security adviser Faleh al-Fayyad that "what is witnessed in the regional and international arenas requires Iraq and Syria to move forward with everything that would preserve their sovereignty and independence of their decision against the schemes of division and chaos that the enemies are devising from outside."
Assad added that "the fate of the region is determined only by the people, no matter how great the challenges."
The Syrian president met a few days ago with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arisa, who likened events in Venezuela to what is happening in Syria because of the illegal interference of Western countries in the internal affairs of countries.
According to the Syrian president's press office: "The policies of a number of Western countries, led by the United States with regard to what is happening in Venezuela and its serious interference in its internal affairs, as well as the sanctions and embargo imposed on the country, are a targeted methodology for these countries against all who disagree with their policies."
