The head of the border crossings, Kadhim al-Aqabi, revealed on Thursday the results of his participation in the meetings of the Iraqi-Syrian committee on the axis of the border crossings, indicating the mechanism of agreement to open the port of Al-Kawim border.
"We agreed with our brothers in the Republic of Syria to open the port of Al-Baqamal, provided that the requirements for trade exchange and the passage of people are prepared as soon as possible," al-Aqabi said in a statement.
"It is expected that these requirements will be provided within a period of up to six months. The two countries also agreed to continue coordination and consultation in the field of opening the rest of the border crossings and according to the security situation."
"We have stressed the importance of working to close all informal crossings to curb smuggling attempts, which constitute a threat to national security and a waste of public funds," he said.
