A UN human rights rapporteur said Iraq must ensure that leaders of an organization calling for justice appear to be committing war crimes and genocide against civilians, not just for belonging to a "terrorist" group.

"A court in Baghdad sentenced four men, two Iraqi and one Syrian, to death on 30 October on charges of belonging to a banned terrorist organization," said Agnes Kalamard, UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial killings and summary and summary executions. .

Their identities were not disclosed, but they described them in a statement as "four senior associates of the leadership of the preacher."

"It was free in the trial to shed light on an internal speaker and create a necessary judicial record of crimes against people."

The terrorist organization that took control of large areas of Iraq and Syria in 2014 announced the establishment of the "Caliphate State," and terrorized the public beheading and sexual enslavement of women and girls, including women from the Kurdish Yazidi community.

The organization lost its last stronghold in Syria last month.

"The Iraqi government must take appropriate steps to prosecute those who have committed crimes against the Iraqi people, including allegations of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes," Kalamard said.

"At least Iraqi prosecutors have had to bring additional charges under the Iraqi Penal Code, such as murder or torture charges ... to defendants for accounting purposes," she said.

She explained that international standards guaranteeing a fair trial did not appear to be met in "hasty" criminal proceedings, during which men were denied access to lawyers.

"Despite extensive abuses, none of the victims or their families participated in the trial or testimony of the Karkh Criminal Court," Kalamard said.

Calamard, who made recommendations on criminal accountability after a visit to Iraq in 2017, added that the right to know the truth of gross human rights violations was "inherent."

"Justice can not be achieved in secret. The trial of these four leaders in Daqash should have been an important opportunity for the victims, their families and the witnesses to talk about their plight and listen to them."
