Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that his country would start filling the reservoir of the Elissu Dam on the Tigris River in June, despite the Iraqi protest when Ankara began briefly holding water behind the dam last summer.
Speaking at an election rally in the southeastern city of Mardin near the dam, Erdogan said the project would contribute 1.5 billion pounds a year to the Turkish economy. The cost of the dam is 8.5 billion lira ($ 1.6 billion).
The dam will produce 1,200 megawatts of electricity for southeast Turkey. He was criticized for its negative effects in Turkey and Iraq.
