The Committee on Technical Restrictions on Trade (TAFTA) held its first meeting at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo today, under the chairmanship of the Sultanate of Oman and the participation of representatives of the Arab countries, to develop a legislative framework that tackles non-tariff technical restrictions that negatively affect inter-Arab or international trade.
The Director of the Department of Economic Integration at the Arab League, Dr. Bahjat Abu-Nasr said in a statement after the meeting that the committee discussed the terms of reference for its work and the development of a plan of action to formulate the special legal annex to the Convention on technical restrictions on trade within the framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area.
"The survey prepared by the UNU Secretariat revealed that the issue of sanitary and phytosanitary measures and non-tariff technical restrictions is one of the main obstacles to trade and has a negative impact on inter-Arab trade and international trade, Arab and through the formation of this committee to develop a legislative framework of technical restrictions on trade, be an annex to the executive program of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area '.
Abu Al-Nasr pointed out that these non-tariff technical restrictions are the establishment of a state or some countries to set strict specifications and standards on goods, which prevents their entry into the markets of those countries that have developed these specifications, which represents non-tariff technical restrictions that hinder the movement of trade. To establish a governing legislative framework for those non-tariff restrictions on trade to be attached to the executive program of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area.
