Amiri calls for December 31 of each year to be an official holiday

Saturday 5 January

BAGHDAD (Reuters) -

The head of the Fatah alliance, Hadi al-Amiri, called Saturday for the December 31 holiday as a national day to be celebrated every year, while the government demanded the presence of US bases or US ground forces in Iraq.

"I call for December 31 as an official holiday and a national day for Iraq to be celebrated," Amiri said in a speech during the celebration of the "Day of Sovereignty," followed by Sumerian News. "There is no better day than this day, the exit of the occupier from Iraq."

He added that "the real factors that led to this victory are several factors in the forefront of the position of the religious reference clear from the occupation," noting that "the religious authority was and remains and will remain the safety valve for Iraq and national sovereignty and unity."

"The second factor is the position of the Iraqi people, and the third factor is the position of resistance and operations that reject the occupation, which had a significant impact on the exit of the occupier, and the fourth factor is the position of the government's principled rejection of the occupation."

He called on the Iraqi government to "not accept any ground presence or US bases in Iraq," asserting that "this is something that can not be tolerated or overlooked."
