The governor of Basra Assaad al-Eidani said on Tuesday that he will resign from the Iraqi parliament to remain in his current post.

"I am staying governor of Basra," Eidani said in a statement to reporters. "I will go to parliament to give up my seat there."

He added that "Basra needs to coordinate efforts between the local government and the provincial council to improve the reality of service and living in it."
