BAGHDAD (Reuters

) - US Secretary of Defense Jim Matisse's resignation speech is still shaking Washington and putting Pentagon officials and lawmakers in a bind, although his departure for President Donald Trump's administration was widely expected.

With this resignation, Matisse joins a series of senior military generals leaving the White House, specifically the Marines who served "par excellence", according to Business Insider, during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Several US reports speak of disagreements with Trump or his criticism of the resignations.

Business Insider published the image above, taken in 2013, bringing together six Marine Corps generals, all of whom have left the Trump administration, with the exception of General Jay Amos, the current Marine commander.

Defense Secretary Jim Matisse

announced Thursday that he would leave office on February 28 after a dispute with Trump over his foreign policy, including his surprise decisions on withdrawing troops from Syria and starting planning for a withdrawal from Afghanistan.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly

will leave office by the end of this year and has had some success in restoring order to the White House after his appointment in July 2017, but his relationship with Trump was stormy.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Danford

Danford also served as commander of the Marine Corps and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. He is scheduled to remain in office until October 1, 2019, the last day of his term.

Earlier this month, Trump hinted that he would announce a new army command, led by General Mark Millie, despite some reports that expressed Matisse's concerns.

The US special envoy to mobilize an international coalition against the organization of John Allen

is a retired general who did not serve in the Trump administration. But he was used to the outspoken criticism of Trump throughout his campaign and presidency.

During a speech at the National Democratic Congress in 2016, Allen supported Hillary Clinton and likened Trump's pursuit of the presidency to "commercial treatment" for "illegal activities."

Trump reacted to Alan through a twinkle and said his fight against the dodger "failed badly".
