WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump plans to sack US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell for his displeasure over a bank rate hike last week, sources familiar with the situation said.

Observers warned that isolating Powell would be a disastrous step, undermining investor confidence, in the central bank's ability to manage the economy without political interference.

According to the Federal Reserve Act, the US president is not entitled to dismiss the central bank governor without giving positive reasons. This applies equally to the president of the Federal Reserve, who also acts as bank governor, making the rules for his dismissal more ambiguous.
