Source: Washington is trying to convince Baghdad lucrative deal on gas

Saturday 22 December

BAGHDAD (Reuters)

- The United States is trying to persuade Iraq to make a lucrative deal on burned gas, an informed source said on Saturday.

"The United States is trying to persuade Iraq to partner with General Electric, Baker Hughes and Orion to invest the burned gas," the Middle East quoted the source as saying.

"The United States is telling Iraqi officials that it is a lucrative operation for the three parties," he said, adding that "this will stop dependence on Iran and invest gas with the benefit of US companies in this process."

A US official said Friday that the United States had granted Iraq a 90-day exemption from sanctions against Iran.
