BAGHDAD (Reuters) -[size=17]Iraqi President Barham Salih on Sunday abandoned his second citizenship, a commitment to the Iraqi constitution that prevents dual citizenship for those holding high-ranking security or security posts in the country.[/size]

The spokesman for the Iraqi presidency, Luqman al-Fili, that President Barham Saleh"legally abandoned his British citizenship as a commitment to the provisions of the Iraqi constitution," according to a correspondent "Sky News Arab" in Baghdad.

Article 18 of the Iraqi Constitution states that "the nationality of the Iraqi may be varied and that whoever has a senior sovereign or security position shall give up any other acquired nationality, and this shall be regulated by law."

The Iraqi Council of Representatives, Saleh, was elected president on October 2, after two rounds of election under the parliament, after a competition with Fouad Hassan, of the Kurdistan Democratic Party.

Saleh was the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan for the Iraqi presidency, and was the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government twice, was born in Sulaymaniyah in 1960.
