Baghdad protests Turkish bombardment of Shankal and Makhmour

Iraqi Foreign Minister calls on Turkish ambassador ...

14/12/2018 - 20:49 Iraq

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry on Friday summoned Ankara's ambassador to Baghdad, Fatih Yildiz, and handed him a letter of protest over the Turkish bombardment of Sankal, Mount Qarjoukh and Makhmour last night.

The Turkish aircraft bombed the PKK PKK last night, according to a statement of the Turkish Staff, in Shankal and Mount Kargog and Makhmour.

A statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said that it summoned Turkish Ambassador Fatih Yildiz and handed him a protest note on what happened yesterday. He condemned "the Turkish planes' violations of the Iraqi airspace and the targeting of several sites in the areas of Jabal Sinjar and Makhmour."

"Such acts constitute a violation of the sovereignty of Iraq and the safety of its citizens and an unacceptable act at all levels, contrary to the principles of good neighborliness between the two countries," the ministry said.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said it "renewed its refusal to use Iraqi territory as a base or a corridor to carry out actions that reflect the security of neighboring countries and brothers."
