The United States granted Iraq a 45-day temporary exemption from its November 5 sanctions on Iran to give Baghdad time to begin taking steps toward independence in the energy field, the US embassy in Baghdad said on its front page. "Facebook" last month.
Iraq relies on Iran to import gas and electricity. The current temporary waiver is conditional on Iraq not paying Iranian import payments in US dollars.
The Iraqi official said in a statement to the "New Arab" that "the Iraqi side offered the Americans to compensate Iraq for any negative effects resulting from the cutting of gas and electricity in Iran and find alternatives to them."
On Tuesday, the Iraqi prime minister received the US Secretary of Energy and his accompanying delegation. "The two sides discussed the importance of developing relations between the two countries in all fields and the need to expand cooperation in the fields of energy, oil and economic files set by the Iraqi government at the top of its priorities to achieve the growth and prosperity of the Iraqi economy and the optimal investment of natural resources."
For his part, the US Secretary of Energy, "his country's support for the Iraqi government in all areas, and its orientation to promote stability and reconstruction of Iraq and the development of the economy, especially in energy projects, and its readiness to contribute to the development and support of the sectors of electric power and oil, according to the plans and directions and priorities of the Iraqi government."
The United States recently warned Iraq against circumventing sanctions and failing to implement them as the government and Iraqi political and party parties sought to persuade Washington to exclude Iraq from the sanctions.
