Minister of Communications reveals the numbers of Internet subscribers and users of communication sites in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) -

Communications Minister Naeem Thajil revealed on Monday more than 19 million Internet users and 17 million users of social networking sites in Iraq.

"The telecommunications and information sector is well planned in the coming years," he told a news conference at the US Chamber of Commerce in Baghdad. "The government understands the role of telecommunications in the next phase to achieve sustainable development."

"Because of the increasing demand and the urgent need, the government sector alone can not meet the ambition, and the private sector can have a lot of space on this," he said.

He explained that "the ministry has started since the first day to undertake its tasks to develop the infrastructure of communication networks to work on the electronic system in all institutions of the state instead of papers."

"In 2017 there are more than 19.3 million Internet users in Iraq and 17 million users of social networking sites and the number is growing every year," he said.
