Iraq calls on Russia to increase investments in the country

President of the Republic Barham Salih met at his residence in Rome Friday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
"At the beginning of the meeting, the president received the congratulations of Lavrov on the assumption of the post of President of the Republic and the formation of the Iraqi government," a presidential statement said.
He added that "during the meeting, it was stressed the importance of developing bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and strengthening them in all fields, in a way that serves the people of both countries."
The meeting focused on "the regional situation and the war against the terrorist advocate, where emphasis was placed on strengthening military and security cooperation, and the need to exert more efforts to eliminate the terrorist organization and dry its sources."
He also stressed the importance of the Iraqi market to Russian investments, which could help in the development and development of infrastructure in Iraq, especially in the areas of oil and energy, calling for "to increase the level of these investments in all fields."
For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed his country's keenness to strengthen its relations with Iraq and enhance opportunities for cooperation with him

The first high-level Russian meeting with the new Iraqi leadership


Iraqi President Barham Salih and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov exchanged views on pressing international and regional issues on the sidelines of the "Dialogue of the Mediterranean" conference in the Italian capital of Rome.
The Russian side reiterated its position in favor of the unity and sovereignty of Iraq on all its territory, expressing the hope that the Iraqis will find an objective solution to all problems and contradictions within the framework of a comprehensive national dialogue, taking into account the interests of all ethnic and religious groups in Iraqi society. The formation of a new government of the country.
The two sides also discussed the bilateral cooperation between the two countries and ways of developing it. The importance of active participation in the Russian-Iraqi intergovernmental committee dealing with trade, economic and scientific cooperation issues, which is scheduled to be held in the first quarter of 2019 in Baghdad, was also stressed.
For his part, the Iraqi president said in a speech before the conference , "Iraq seeks to remove obstacles to private sector companies, both foreign and Iraqi, as well as international financial institutions and donor countries and sovereign wealth to invest in major infrastructure projects.
"These projects include deep port facilities in Basra, the highway network, new railways, airports, industrial cities and dams, irrigation projects in the Nineveh Plain, Garamian and Erbil, as well as land reclamation in the south."

Saleh stressed the new government's efforts under the chairmanship of Adel Abdul Mahdi, to implement an ambitious plan for economic restructuring, based on the empowerment of the private sector and the promotion of investment.
