Integrity: After spending 29 billion dollars .. Electricity rationing continues

During 11 years ...

22/11/2018 - 18:34 Economy / Iraq

Iraq has spent 29 billion dollars on the electric power sector in 11 years, the Iraqi Integrity Commission said in a report on Thursday, noting that the implementation of electric contracts included many "irregularities".

The report said that «total funds disbursed within the budget of the Ministry of Electricity between 2006 - 2017 amounted to more than 34 trillion Iraqi dinars, about $ 29 billion».

He pointed out that the production capacity achieved reached 16 thousand megawatts, and the design capacity of about 33595 megawatts, which means that the proportion of energy achieved less than half.

Integrity revealed that the Commission's team discovered "a lot of irregularities", including the failure to implement the government's decision 2015 by exempting eight general managers from their duties and referring them to retirement.

Among the irregularities as well, «the transfer of the contract for the processing of gas to the power plants to the companies without the approval of the Committee to analyze tenders».

Iraq needs more than 23,000 megawatts of electricity to meet the needs of its population and institutions without interruption. Residents in Iraq have been complaining about frequent power cuts for years.

The population's resentment is high in the summer (peak season), with interruptions in the national grid of electricity rising with temperatures rising to some days at 50 degrees Celsius.

The British Financial Times reported last month that US company GE would probably win a multi-billion dollar electricity deal in Iraq thanks to US administration intervention, according to sources familiar with the progress of the negotiations.

The US group competed with Siemens to rehabilitate Iraq's power grid.

The "intervention" of the administration, according to the newspaper, to reduce the chances of the German group, which was about to conclude the deal worth $ 15 billion with the Iraqi government.

Baghdad is seeking more electricity to curb the energy crisis that has been a major contributor to mass protests in the south of the country.
