Trump informs his advisers of his desire to visit Iraq and the Washington Post reveal details

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump is to visit Baghdad to inspect his forces there, Trump said, advising his advisers for the first time since taking office that he could visit Iraq and Afghanistan.

The report quoted current and former White House advisers as confirming that Trump had so far refused to visit US troop positions in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying he did not want to link himself to the two wars he considered a failure.

But Trump recently began talking to his advisers about the possibility of inspecting troops deployed in combat zones, despite his opposition to US military operations abroad.

Trump, during previous meetings on the subject of the possible visit, described the two US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as "total shame," noting that a long journey and the dangers that could threaten him in the combat zone were necessary.

But late last week, Trump said in an interview with Fox News in response to a question about why he did not visit the combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan: "I think you will see it ... and some things are planned," adding that he did not want to discuss the issue for security and other reasons .

In the interview, Trump reiterated his criticism of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, describing the war as "a grave mistake that should not have happened."

Some advisers have suggested Trump's plans for a possible visit are not fixed, explaining that the president has just begun to talk in recent weeks that this may have to happen.

This came amid a dispute between Trump and a group of retired generals, including retired Admiral Willian H. McRiffin, whom the president accused of slowing down the hunt for al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
