Baghdad:

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Moscow's government supports Iraq's return to its leading position among all nations, Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy said Friday, referring to an official invitation to President Barham Saleh to visit.

 

"Saleh received at the Peace Palace in Baghdad on Tuesday the special envoy of the Russian president to the Middle East and African countries, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and his accompanying delegation," the presidential press office said in a statement.

Saleh welcomed the visiting delegation, pointing out that "Iraq's view of the importance of the Russian role and Russia's good relations with various actors in the region," stressing the need to develop Russian-Iraqi relations for the benefit of both countries and for historical and international considerations.

He also stressed the need to "develop the talks between the two countries in the economic, security, military and technological fields, noting the importance of security and intelligence coordination in order to combat terrorism."

"There is a new policy in Iraq based on coordination and integration for the benefit of Iraq and the return of its leading role in the region away from the fragmentation of political positions," he said, adding that "there is a common understanding regarding the Syrian file because of its relationship to the stability and security of Iraq and the region, .

For his part, Bogdanov, 'his country's desire to develop relations with Iraq and economic openness and cooperation in the fight against terrorism,' expressing 'aspiration to return the leading role of Iraq in the region'.

The Russian envoy stressed the importance of strategic partnership with the Iraqi government and activating the work of the Coordination Council between the two countries in several areas.

Bogdanov also conveyed an official invitation to President Barham Saleh to visit Russia in the context of strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation.
