Economy News Baghdad:

The United States said Iraq could continue to import natural gas and electricity supplies from Iran for 45 days, several days after Iran's oil sector was re-sanctioned .

"The United States has granted Iraq a 45-day temporary waiver of sanctions to allow Iraq to continue to buy natural gas and electricity from Iran, " the US embassy in Iraq said on its front page on Thursday .

"This exemption provides time for Iraq to begin taking steps towards independence in energy ."

Iraqi central bank officials said in August that the country's economy was so heavily linked to Iran that Baghdad asked Washington to waive some sanctions .

The current temporary waiver is conditional on Iraq not paying Iranian import payments in US dollars .

The United States re-imposed sanctions on Iran on Nov. 5 .

The sanctions include 50 Iranian banks and subsidiaries, more than 200 people and vehicles in the shipping sector, Iran Air and more than 65 of its aircraft .
