The Euphrates -

The European Commission announced in Brussels, the extension of the mandate of the European Union mission in Iraq until mid-April 2020.

The Commission said in a statement that the extension of the mission is a budget of about 65 million euros, noting that this aims to achieve three goals A strategy is to provide advice and expertise to the Iraqi authority to identify Iraqi security sector reform requirements, coordinate EU support in this area, and identify opportunities at the national, regional and local levels to increase EU involvement in supporting civil security sector reform needs.

The Mission is contributing to the implementation of a comprehensive strategy to combat terrorism and organized crime, with particular reference to border management, financial crimes, money laundering, trafficking in monuments and cultural heritage. It works in coordination with key international actors operating in Iraq, including the NATO mission in the country.

The European Union mission was launched in October 2017 to support the implementation of the civilian aspects of the Iraqi national security program. The program aims to build state institutions capable of consolidating security and peace under the rule of law. The program identifies a number of threats to national security, including terrorism, corruption and political instability.

The mission is based in Baghdad and is headed by German Markus Ritter and now has 52 employees.
