The US administration is considering granting exemptions to sanctions against Tehran

To countries that reduce their imports of Iranian oil ...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The administration of President Donald Trump is considering granting exemptions from sanctions to be imposed next month for countries cutting down on Iranian oil imports, a US government official said.

The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the administration was "in the midst of an internal process" to consider granting exemptions for large cuts.

It was the first time a US official said the administration was considering granting exemptions.

Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo said in India last month the administration would consider granting exemptions and some Iranian oil buyers would take "some time" to stop their dealings with Iran.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton said on Thursday that the administration's goal was not to grant exemptions and "the decline of Iranian oil, gas and condensate exports to zero."

He said the administration would not necessarily do so.

"The administration is ready to work with countries that cut imports on a case-by-case basis," the official said.

The US administration pulled out of an agreement on Iran's nuclear program in May and will unilaterally impose sanctions on Iran's crude oil consumers on November 4.

The sanctions are aimed at forcing Tehran to halt its intervention in Syria and Iraq and end its ballistic missile program.

Iran says it has complied with its nuclear deal signed in 2015 with five major powers as well as the United States.
